What is all the fuss about lactation cookies?

So you may have seen I am very excited to launch my new lactation cookie range ‘Mothers Milk’.  It is something I have been thinking about for a few years but for some of you lactation cookies are a very new concept.

With breastfeeding we often talk about feeding the feeder!  This is because the quality of food the mother has influences the quality of breast milk she will make, we all know quality is more important than quantity.

Most lactation cookies are full of oats, brewers yeast, flaxseed meal and potentially a small amount of a herb called fenugreek.  These are all called galactagogue’s and put simply they help to increase the prolactin level in a mothers body which will in turn increase her breast milk supply. The other key to a great supply is regular feeding and drainage of your breasts. In some cases your baby will increase its feeding times to two hourly for some of the day- this will also trigger a reflex to increase the supply for your baby.

Remember, it is normal for your breasts to feel empty at the end of the day and this is a great sign of good drainage and making the right amount of milk for your baby.  However, if you are feeling very flat and quite ‘empty’ with a fussy baby the simple lactation cookie can be a natural way to give your system a boost and provide your baby with the perfect balanced breast milk it needs.

Just one or two Mothers Milk lactation cookies a day (instead of a Tim tam or chocolate bar!) will give your body that extra boost to help you maintain a fantastic supply to help breastfeeding be a relaxed stress free time for both you and your baby.
